Kodak Moment Redefined: Digital, Glossy, In Your Face

October 19, 2007

OK, never seen this before, but it’s brilliant. Do you feel like your company’s getting behind the times? Do your competitors now understand your new prospects better than you? Products getting a bit stale? How’d you like to be Kodak? Stuck in the silver(halide) age while everyone else’s going digital. Well, Kodak decided they’re not gonna take it any more. They’ve blown up buildings on Kodak central’s campus. And they made this must-see video:

Thanks, as usual to my favorite photo blog: the strobist.

Boo-ya for real! I'm old enough to have very positive associations with Kodak (Advantix and the Disc aside) and have long wondered how they are going to leverage their phenomenal brand to get back in the game. They have limited time to do so, because younger people won't know them. I'm glad to hear they're serious. It will be interesting to see what they come up with. I think a key area will be output: printers, paper and SERVICES. High quality books with easy upload/layout are an important new segment. Wedding photogs are still getting kilodollars for books that can be made for 1/10th that. Also, I think they'd be insane to abandon the schmaltz. It's why most normal people take photos.
