Dude! There’s a Fab in Newport Beach – For Sale!

February 14, 2008

Last November, I wrote about my visit to Jazz Semiconductor (Dude! There’s a Fab in Newport Beach), which is a boutique semiconductor foundry in Newport Beach that has the venerable Rockwell Semiconductor for a grandpa. Jazz runs RF, analog, and high-voltage CMOS and BiCMOS processes on 8-inch wafer lines. Gil Amelio’s investment firm Jazz Technologies (formerly Acquicor) owns Jazz Semi. Today, EDN’s sister publication Semiconductor International is carrying a Business Wire announcement that Jazz “has initiated a review of strategic alternatives to enhance stockholder value. To assist the company in its analysis and consideration of various strategic alternatives, the board of directors has retained UBS Securities LLC as its financial adviser.” That’s investment banker code, which translates to “The “For Sale” sign just went up on Jamboree Road.”

Is this the same building that was put up by Collins Radio in the late 60's?

I believe Conexant owns the land and would love to cash in. Jazz is poorly managed snd has been passed around from one investor to another.

I have been in that fab many times. The fab is on the 2nd story, offices on the 1st. You can look up and see overhead supply lines labelled "cyanide" etc running directly above the cubicles. Fashion Islan is right down the street. Lots of Bentleys and Masaratis. Bulldoze the place, the land is worth pure gold.

I worked down there briefly in the 80s, on assignment for the DoD. Sorry to see it going the way of so many fabs in the US. Good blogs, Steve. Keep'em coming.

I used to work for Conexant Systems years back and saw how horribly the management ran the company (especially the ego-inflated, pumpkin-headed, former CEO Dwight Decker). With virtually all fab/foundry services in low cost Asia, Jazz Semi doesn't have much future. Having a fab these days in Newport Beach ain't smart...with $$$ beach front community, they can sell the land and turn it into super pricey condos or another shopping mall. Just like Conexant, management at Jazz will probably sell the IP, shutter the place and make out if not like bandits, do OK.

Don't know if the fab is worth anything, but the land (if they own it) has to be worth a fortune. They have lots of great technology - has to be worth something to somebody.

There's one for sale in Colorado Springs as well, vacated by Intel a few months ago. Intel decided it was far better for their bottom line to fire up to 1000 U.S. workers and build a new fab in China!
