Rinspeed's sQuba Electric Car: No Mr. Bond, I Want You to Dive – Don’t Miss the Video

February 15, 2008

Today’s San Jose Mercury News carried a story on the Rinspeed sQuba, an electric car that also serves as a boat and a submarine, like James Bond’s Lotus Esprit in The Spy Who Loved Me. (One big difference between my blog and the Mercury News. I can bring you the video, see below). Rinspeed, a Swiss company, specializes in building far-out concept cars. It based the sQuba on the Lotus Elise, which is not only kin to Bond’s Esprit but also to the Tesla Motors’ electric Roadster. The sQuba can travel at 77 mph on land, 3 mph on water, and 1.8 mph underwater. The car is an open-air car, so when you’re under the water you’re breathing from a tube ala scuba. In that way, the sQuba’s more like the undersea carriers used by the bad guys in Thunderball than Bond’s submarine Esprit.

I worked for the company that made the underwater car used in Thunderball (Note that I worked there long after they made the car). Some interesting info, the car wasn't made for the movie. I think they made several for a Sheik who was going to give them as gifts to his kids, but he never took delivery. Also, it was an open-air car, so you got wet and had to use SCUBA (though I think they portrayed it differently in the movie if I remember correctly).

Does it have a forward looking active sonar for low visibility operation?
