3M’s Microprojector: Mamma Mia, That’s a Bright LED

Last December, I wrote about Microvision’s laser-based micoprojector that could potentially put a video projector into portable devices like cell phones and PDAs. Now 3M has announced a technology demonstration of an LED-based microprojector that’s about the same size as the Microvision design and can project a 50-inch-diagonal image on a wall in a reasonably dark room. It’s also targeted at the same end applications. Not much technical data yet, but an industrial-cool video:

These are cool, but I think there's room for something that splits the difference between these micro and "macro" projectors, in size and brightness. Something the size of a paperback novel, perhaps. I mean, small is nice, but there are diminishing returns.

I received an AIPTek(.com) pocket projector last Friday. Since I'm finishing up a move, I haven't been able to do much with it, but it is way cool. I forsee being able to use it to assist in robot navigation.
