Intel's media server announcement: is it really about storage?

November 8, 2007

This week, both AMD and Intel announced home media server offerings, which I find remarkably uncoincidental, unless there is a storage-focused conference or tradeshow happening – which I am not aware of – but please correct me if I am wrong.

This announcement by Intel just one day after AMD seems to fit right in with the chip giant’s unwritten, unspoken of marketing strategy to smash AMD in any way possible.

In fact, when it comes to manufacturing nodes, a source told me recently that Intel will keep on the 2 year Moore’s Law rule by simply using manufacturing node numbers in sequence – for instance, “45 nm” doesn’t necessarily translate to a 45 nm measurement in the device or process technology – it is simply a marketing tactic used to stay ahead of its arch-nemesis AMD.

Do you mean to say that an EDN senior editor just found out that "45nm" has NO PHYSICAL MEANING with regard to microprocessor technology nodes? Wake up.
