Engineering tops list of college degrees ranked by salary

August 5, 2008

For all of our readers who have commented in this as well as other EDN blogs that they would not encourage their kids to go into engineering, you may want to rethink that.

According to a 2008 education and salary survey by PayScale Inc, a real-time profiling company that runs an ongoing salary survey and database of individual employee compensation profiles, engineering ranks as the top undergraduate degrees by salary.

Specifically, chemical, computer, electrical, and aerospace engineering, respectively, are the top paying careers based on an undergrad degree.

The top four engineering degrees have a low point starting median salary of $57,700 (aerospace engineering) and a high point mid-career median salary of $107,000 (chemical engineering).

Interestingly, the top 10 on the list are all STEM majors (assuming you count economics as math, not politics). See the chart directly below where the blue represents starting median salary and the gray mid-career median salary.

The report also breaks out lists of some of the best colleges for specific undergrad study based on salary potential. MIT tops the engineering list with a starting median salary of $72,200 and mid-career median salary of $126,000, according to PayScale data. MIT is followed by the California Institute of Technology (CIT) and unexpectedly, Harvey Mudd College, which continues to define itself as a liberal arts school, despite its engineering reputation. See the chart directly below where the blue represents starting median salary and the gray mid-career median salary.

PayScale’s methodology is based on annual pay for Bachelors graduates without higher degrees. Typical starting graduates have three years of experience; mid-career have 15.5 years. PayScale’s full 2008 college salary report can be found here.

Are you surprised by the survey’s findings? As always, we welcome your thoughts below.

The engineers I know make good money. I work for an aerospace company and i go to school. The starting salary is about 65000 a year, but certain engineering jobs start you off at about 90000. You would be maxing out at over 100000. You can also become a manager and start off at 135000+. I don't see anything wrong with making that amount and having great benefits with just a bachelors degree and some experience. Other people that I know, that have been working for sometime, make over 200 grand and live a comfortable life. Getting into the medical field and law, usually takes longer to accomplish too.

I think that's awesome that a company decided to advertise their open position in these comments. I agree with the "job satisfaction" thing. I know I could be making more money elsewhere, but I have plenty and no stress to go with it. Really, who can ask for more?

Why so many negative comments? I have a blast doing what I'm good at and I get paid pretty well for it.

Be thankful you didn't major in Chemistry. Salaries suck, and they still suck mid-career. The only way to a better paycheck is to either get into marketing, or just get out of the field altogether. You'll find a lot of ex-chemists out there, putting their college educations to good use selling life insurance, replacement windows, real estate, etc. Or mid- to late career PhD's chemists that get laid off at 50 and can never get back into their professions. And Corporate America continues to whine about the dearth of domestic STEM help...B******T!!

Interesting comments and thought provoking . Folks ,engineer (ing )is a continuous process of change , a change to make life better for all inhabitants of this planet. If one can be part of it ,Great . As some one commented ,if u are passionate about it,nothing u have to worry about and that may be true for other professions as well but working on cutting edge to make a difference is all that counts .

Having worked for Dennis Kozlowski of Tyco, now a resident of that NY State Hotel with the bars on the windows, I learned how fundamentally crooked and greedy CEO's can be and how worthless they think engineers are. They are easily replaced day workers to be hired and fired at will to make the bottom line look better. The idea of a career is a succession of day jobs. No Pension, no medical plan and a 401k with not a whole lot in it.

Comparing that to salary of civil engineer at Cal tran, it is nothing. Caltran engineer (5 year of experience - sick) works 2 hours a day at most for 75K/yr, meaning 300K/yr for a full 8 hour/day. Better cry looking at your tax dedeucted with every paycheck.

I don't know why you guys get so excited with 60K, 80K, or 100K salaries. I'm an engineer and quit my dayjob to start my own business. You can easily make double or triple those amounts running your own business..... staying at home.... Work smart... not harder.

you do engineering for the love of the job rather than the salary alone. Getting paid well to do something you love is a bonus! The example of the accountant is interesting, but I'd hang myself if I had to stare at GL's, income statements, etc all day long. I may not be paid top dollars and often complain about my lot in life, but I can honestly say that the work I am involved in is interesting, challenging, and gives me personal satisfaction. If you're passionate about your career, even if you do get down-sized, another job will come along.

My niece at four years out of college gets 75K as an accountant. Plain state college grad. Not an expensive school like MIT CalTech or other hard to get accepted expensive big named school. She received offers from big companies and small companies in both expensive cities and inexpensive smaller towns. She wasn''t forced to work in an expensive location just to get good pay. Compare that to your typical average run of the mill engineering grad? Can you work anywhere you want? Or do you need to live in an expensive area like San Jose? She won the science fair in high school but she didn''t want to go through downsizing, outsourceing and other words for layoffs like her father and I so she went where the security was. So she majored in international business. The bonuses just keep flowing!

Here, Graduates start on up to $45k. Its a long road up, and to get above 70k you must be pretty special for a long time. Trades people and labourers get up to twice as much as engineers. Electricians and Plumbers are in the top earners (lawyers and doctors aside).

Is there study done on the work-load to salary ratio? A $150K job may be relatively cheap than a $90K job? Is there study done on the how long a person will live after retirement vs salary?

A technical education (combined with business and finance and sales education, of course) sure helps if you want to eventually run a technology company. And although CEOs do tend to make an ok income it actually is a bit competitive. I'm suggesting to my kids that a career that can't be performed away from the customer (like law, direct sales, medicine, auto mechanic) is less likely to be outsourced.

The so called career is good for 10 years until the next flood of cheap new grads come along. Propaganda to keep the cheap pipeline full. The EE is payed about the same as a Tech. A new grad gets about 50k, 60 hr weeks, 3% raises, and the boot after 30.

A lot of these surveys are meaningless because expensive areas pay high salaries and the engineer is not better off. It''s hard to compare different areas in the country because cost of living indexes make costs in different parts of the USA look closer than they are. People shouldn''t complain about how tough engineering is. Most high paying jobs are very competitive. Possible exception: CEOs.

It doesn't matter whether you're popular when you're needed. Those glitzy cell phones aren't going to design themselves, nor is oil going to magically ooze out of the ground and into our gas tanks. We can, of course, debate whether this is the best application of our skills; for better or worse, this is what's in demand today.
