TGn Sync wins round in IEEE 802.11n slugfest

March 18, 2005

According to ExtremeTech‘s “IEEE settles on a single 802.11n standard” the wireless LAN moved a step closer to the next-generation IEEE 802.11n standard yesterday. The IEEE working group voted to select the TGn Sync group’s proposal over the proposal submitted by the WWiSE group. Earlier this week, I linked to an interview with executives representing both groups in “Executives from 802.11 chip vendors play nice over “n”.”

No doubt we will hear more from TGn Sync backers Atheros and Intel in the coming days. Unfortunately, the vote may not mean much. TGn Sync must win a subsequent vote in May by a 75% majority for its work to be adopted as is. More likely, TGn Sync will win by a simple majority and the laborious process or compromise will truly begin.
