San Diego airport terminal lets waiting passengers plug in

March 3, 2010

This is so simple, yet so useful for travelers. How many times have you had to stake out a wall power socket at an airport that required sitting on the floor next to a trashcan, or sitting three gates away from the one you’re travelling through just to get that rare treasure, an airport wall power socket.

n Diego airport terminal 1 - Phil BakerThe Southwest terminal at San Diego International airport (Terminal 1) has them under a row of about 20 seats for each gate. Brilliant.

Andy T - so if I understand your idea, we would probably turn it into a tax per outlet/switch per year. Which might drive intellegent power controllers to catch hold in homeland America. Personally, I added 12 power outlets in just one room for all my computers/electronics.

Good one Southwest! Being able to "Log On" and make money while I'm waiting for my flight would be a tie breaker on choosing an airline. I'm getting too old to sit on the floor...

I have never understood the exclusion from the 6 foot socket rule of the National Electrical Code that commercial buildings enjoy, the premise being that most devices have only a 3 and a bit foot cord. But then again, perhaps the commercial building code is on to something.....think of the energy wasted in airports if there were enough sockets to facilitate EVERYONE with laptops to play Solitaire while waiting for the plane. Maybe we'd save energy as a country if NEC were changed the residential code to requiring a maximum of 1 wall socket per room, a disabling of all surplus sockets under this rule in existing installations, and perhaps allowing a futureproof number of sockets for just the one location of the household entertainment center...something like this: www.tinyurl.com/yb3kdb2
