Your own little Starbucks: USB-powered coffee warmer

November 13, 2008

Here’s another candidate for my collection of things-you-don’t-necessarily-associate-with-needing-a-USB-port: A coffee warmer. Yet another instance of how the USB port is becoming as important for power sourcing as for information sourcing.

USB coffee warmerFrom the Kotula’s catalog: USB Coffee Warmer: “The solution to your cold coffee dilemma! Finally, no more cold coffee at your workstation. Coffee warmer plugs into your computer USB port to keep your coffee, tea or cocoa hot. No need for software or batteries. Suitable for PC and Macintosh computers. Mug, coffee and computer not included, sorry.”

[truncated comment] ...Assuming it doesn't break the USB 2.0 spec, the maximum heat it can deliver is 2.5 W; that might keep the drink warm-ish as an immersion element, but as a bottom-heater the best it can do is slow coffee cooling a fraction. If you want to keep you coffee warm, put a lid on the cup, and it'll stay warm for ages, even outdoors on a cold windy day. Ceramic and plastic cups are pretty good insulators, and most of the heat of the drink is lost through the top.

Alas, a half-baked idea, poorly implemented - see also the Peltier beer cooler coaster - and as such is designed to be sold rather than used successfully. That said, I''m sure millions of these things will be flying off the shelves this Christmas. Assuming it doesn''t break the USB 2.0 spec, the maximum heat it can deliver is 2.5 W
