Enpirion packs 23 W/cm2 into 7x4mm 3A dc-dc converter
Enpirion is one of the leaders – if not the leader – in the PwrSoC (power supply on a chip) space. It’s just announced the EN5337QI, a 5MHz, 3A synchronous buck dc-dc converter that fits into a miniscule 28 mm2 package, and that’s including the integrated inductor.
The package is less than one half the size of its 3A predecessors from Enpirion, and the company claims it’s one third the size of the competitors’ 3A offerings. For applications where switching noise is a concern, you can phase lock the switching frequency to an external clock to eliminate or move unwanted beat frequencies out-of-band.
Power density is 23 W/cm2 (149 W/in2).
The device operates over an input voltage range of 2.375 V to 5.5 V, with a 92% peak efficiency. To see how the efficiency varies with voltage and output current, take a look at the graph below:

It’s priced at $2.50 (1,000).
(Since Enpirion’s products aren’t monolithic, with the inductor on the some substrate as the logic and switching devices, they’re more properly referred to as a PSIP (power supply in package) than a PwrSoC. But PwrSoCs are just a matter of time now…)
