New lithium ion battery pack doubles car price
Speaking of newsletters about electric cars, I received a newsletter today from the American distributor for Flybo, the Chinese-made electric car. A new optional feature is a lithium ion battery pack. However, “…We have the Li Ion battery packs in for testing. We have one vehicle with a 72V, 450AH configuration set up for testing. It charges in 2 hours, is 1/3rd the size of the lead acid batteries, weighs less, doubles the range, and they are simply fantastic.” Only problem? The cost for the pack is $10,000 for a car whose total cost is $12,800.
So why would the company offer this optional lithium ion battery pack? I’m assuming it has the same advantages of any li ion battery: Greater energy density, allowing more travel between charges, as well as more power available for acceleration. But more importantly, because the price of li ion will continue to drop, and within a few years the pack will be available for half its initial price.
