PHEV on sale now at your local BYD auto dealer (in China, anyway)

January 6, 2009

Here’s an update to the PowerSource post of October 15th, Chinese battery company readies hybrid-electric car; gets boost from Buffet’s bucks: BYD has announced it is indeed selling the F3DM PHEV in China, aiming it at government and corporate buyers, and making the F3DM the first production PHEV. The car is priced at about 150,000 yuan or about US$21,900. No word on what the warranteed life of the car’s lithium ion-iron phosphate battery is. Note that BYD Auto’s parent company, BYD got its start as a cell phone battery manufacturer.

F3DM PHEV from BYD AutoThe F3DM has not passed any of the safety or emission standards that would allow its sale in the US or Europe. BYD originally set 2010 as the target date for US sales, but has now pushed it back to 2011. Could be an indicator of how difficult it is to modify the car to pass those tests – or it could just be due to the horrific economic climate for auto sales in the US and Europe.

i don''t get it commented:

How is a Jeep Grand Cherokee half the cost of the $21,900 Chinese electric car? We are talking USD, right? What makes it so cheap in China and expensive in the USA? Isn''t it built in the USA and shipped to china? I''m missing something here. If they were to ship the $21,900 Chinese electric car to the USA - barring it being a total piece of crap - I thin at that price americans would gobble them up like nobody''s business, seeing how a hybrid Prius or Civic are mid-$20''s and up, and a plug-in hybrid is a hell of a lot better car than a hybrid.

I saw a video of a F3DM crash test and it was impressive. The front of the car was destroyed, but the passenger shell was in great shape. It looked like the doors would even work. What makes you say this company started with government bailouts?

$21,900 is about twice as expensive as a Jeep Grand Cherokee in China. That is probably why sales are aimed at corporate and government customers. No one else can afford them. When they get to the US, though, they could beat out domestic manufacturers by a wide margin. I'll bet that their CEO doesn't make millions of bucks, either. Then again, they STARTED with government bailouts.

Happy New Year Margery !!! it is a real shame that we are behind a country which learned most about electric cars from USA.To me story is really simple.Few years ago big screen TV was 12,000.00 , today , same size ,even better features less than a half of it.China is doing it right.American manufacturers concerns are just wrong , because most of the first cars would be purchased by rich individuals ,actors , politicians and others who would use them for show-off.All those purchases would start driving prices down - it does not work like that with cars , but they have to learn from electronic industry.Today $100.00 , year from now $40.00.It is a tough world out there , but electronic industry does not seem to be so tragically hit as automotive.BYD will take a lot of work and redesigning to meet NHTSA requirements of safety, so we can still win , but the action has to be NOW, not in a few years.GM decision to stop building VOLT plant is absolutely ridiculous....and we see prices of gas climbing. All we can do is hope and wait for a change.
