Tiny battery can be deployed by a catheter

March 14, 2007

Implantable electronics are a basic part of the bionic ubermensch so beloved by some futurists. However, whether the electronic add-ons are implanted to enhance, monitor, or rescue body parts and functions, they all need some form of safe, reliable, and preferably really small energy storage. EaglePicher Medical Power has released what it claims is the world's smallest implantable medical battery.

EaglePicher medical batteryAt 0.260” long x 0.090” diameter the Micro Battery is small enough to be deployed viaa less-invasive catheter procedure rather than the implantation surgery traditional for, say, pacemakers.

No word on the battery chemistry, although EaglePicher's other battery products all appear to be lithium derivatives. Also no word on the battery's capacity or price range.
