LED system reliability is a strong as the weakest link: February live presentation
Just before I posted my busted LED light yesterday, I received an email from Azmat Malik asking if I could help get the word out about a presentation by Rudi Hechfellner, Dir. of Applications, Philips Lumileds Lighting, “”Reliability from the LED System Perspective — As Strong as the Weakest Link“. The presentation will be at a meeting of the Santa Clara Valley chapter of the IEEE Components, Packaging, and Manufacturing Technology Society on Wednesday evening, February 8, 2012.
If you’re attending Strategies in Light, plan on swinging by Wednesday evening (after you’ve first RSVP’d); The presentation will be at one of the event hotels, the Biltmore, following dinner. Dinner is $20; the presentation is free, but you still need to RSVP.
Azmat tells me he believes there will be actual results from an extended reliability-performance study that LumiLeds undertook over 6-9 months in 2011.
The abstract: There are many claims being made regarding the performance and reliability of LEDs. This presentation will provide a comprehensive insight into factors that impact LED reliability at the component and subsystem level, with emphasis on package and assembly. We will also discuss technical and statistical approaches that may be used to assess LED reliability, as well as compare how reliability is characterized between traditional (incandescent and fluorescent) and SSL light sources. Finally, the presentation will touch on how SSL product reliability impacts the business model.
Rudi’s Bio: Rudi Hechfellner is Director of Applications at Philips Lumileds Lighting. Hechfellner, who joined Philips Lumileds Lighting in 2005, has worked in the Semiconductor Industry for over 16 years developing innovations for technically advanced projects. Prior to joining Philips Lumileds Lighting he was applications engineer for ASICs with focus on high-speed I/O interfaces. Hechfellner holds an Electronic Engineering degree from FH Augsburg Germany.
Larry M commented:
Hope they do a separate section on the base-up case.
LED proponent commented:
LED lighting has made tremendous strides in reliability. I will not be able to attend the meeting or the dinner but would love to read the results to propel the introduction of LED lighting throughout the US and Canada.
