Top 25 distributors list: Avnet no. 1, Mouser shows 30% rev gain

April 28, 2009

To all those who have called me in the last few months, asking when EDN’s Top North American electronic components distributors list would be out: It’s here and it is something to brag about!

There’s no way around the fact that 2008 was a hard year on sales, much thanks to Q4. But among the top 25 distributors on our list, 11 reported double-digit 5-year CAGRs (compound annual growth rates) in the 2008 survey and 21 reported year-over-year revenue growth.

Avnet is number one in the 2008 list ranked by revenue, followed by Arrow and Future. Worth special note is also number five Digi-Key, which showed a 20% five-year CAGR for revenue as of 2008, and number 15 Mouser, which showed a 33% CAGR and a stellar 30% gain in 2008 revenue year over year.

You can access the list via the "Weathering the storm" PDF located in "Shedding some light on the stimulus package," an article that looks at how distributors are seeking opportunities in infrastructure and energy provisions. As always, any comments you have are welcome below.

As the Asia Pacific Regional Manger for Advanced MP Technology, I feel suitable to try to reply to your question. Currently, independents are facing challenges and will be forced to adapt to the current market conditions. Only the strongest, financially solid and with the best staff, will come out benefited with this "filtering process" occurring in the market to those less professional and not long term oriented smaller distributors. Current value added services include BOM analysis, cost reduction, Logistic services, supplier consolidation, Vendor managed inventory, Excess solutions, etc. After one year in Asia, we can say that our position in the market has been solidified and 2009 has a slight improvement when compared to 2008, which at this stage of the crisis, should be taken as a big achievement. This are just my own opinions, and feel free to comment to reach me directly for feedback.

Suzanne - the list include 5 independent distributors, the two largest of which came in just over $300M. That's a major fall for the largest independents. I've read that these firms have been trying to diversify away from just component sales to a blend of revenues on parts and value-added services. It apparently hasn't been very successful. How do independents see the road ahead? Can they transform their businesses to be less volatile?
