Not sure about all this Second Life stuff...

August 10, 2007

Based on my post earlier this week on Second Life, I’ve gotten some feedback from readers and colleagues, and I’m still undecided as to how chips will be made or sold through this medium. Our Contributing Editor Colleen Taylor came across this analysis by market research firm Gartner, which sheds some balanced light on the risks.

There’s no doubt this is a social phenonemon, but will the security risks be too high for businesses to implement this in their organizations if it is not hosted behind a corporate firewall? And I think the jury is still out on how customers are perceiving interactions with suppliers through Second Life.

I’m still curious, and would like to hear from you, if you are a chip designer and are using Second Life in your engineering efforts in any way. Please email me at ann.mutschler@reedbusiness.com or comment below.

FYI, the August 2007 issue of Wired has an article titled "Lonely Planet" about Second Life as a vast wasteland. See online version here: www.wired.com/techbiz/media/magazine/15-08/ff_sheep

The problem with Second Life is that it is an open and collaborative community the allows open sourcing of technology. It could very well be the savior of the US chip design industry. The problem is, the US chip design industry is far too afraid of losing a perceived "competitive edge" that really doesn't exist in the world...only in the minds of the corporate executives. So anyone who participates in the collaborative effort to create something new and innovative will be fired. Ian Mackintosh at OCP-IP has long been a proponent of open development and should probably weigh in on this.
