In my first blog I said I would name Monday posts Miserable Monday. I forgot what ticked me off about Microsoft this weekend but I am sure I will remember in a few sentences. It is 8:00 AM and I have already had a blue-screen of death. That was not Microsoft’s fault. It was the fault of either the Gigabyte motherboard or the AMD socket 939 CPU in my box. If you hook up the memory in dual-channel mode (a matched pair in the proper two sockets) then the box blue screens. About three times a week. I have seen a lot of hassles with this dual-channel memory. If I put it in single channel mode the box is rock solid. I have bought an Asus motherboard and a new high-zoot 4500 CPU so I will let you know how that works out if I ever get the time to build that box.
Now back to Microsoft being evil. What was it I was going to write about today? Not that it takes 3 minutes for a machine to boot. And that box is doing a few billion instructions per second. Can you say bloat-ware? I am trying to use Outlook over the web mail service. It is better than Lotus Notes (Lotus Notes, Lotus Notes)but still pretty evil compared to Fastmail. Why? Fastmail is two guys, Rob and Jeremy. They wrote the whole app in Perl. Microsoft has thousands of people on Outlook. The first rule of software: The more programmers, the worse the result. That is why managing a software project is like herding cats. I will remember the specific thing about Microsoft that made me mad and post that later. Right now I have to go to work editing a contributed article.
