Anti-Ringing Diode

-May 07, 2014

A simple buck switcher can sometimes ring like chapel bells during the off-time of the switching MOSFET as shown in the upper portion of the SPICE model shown here. In the lower portion, we see how that ringing can be suppressed by the addition of a single diode.

Some concern was expressed to me that there is a power efficiency penalty to be paid for adding the anti-ringing diode which is true, but then all designs involve a collection of trade-offs, don't they.

I have also used this diode before where I deemed it appropriate, but for your own designs, you decide.
