Welcome to Open sourced

-July 18, 2012

Welcome to Test & Measurement World's Open Sourced, the open-source test-and-measurement blog.  We’ll explore what is out there in the open-source world and how it relates to our task of performing test and measurement.  We’ll also analyze and compare tools to determine which tools are best for different test and measurement needs.  Notice that I use “we” because I need your help; if you use useful open-source technology or you have open-source tools that you’d like to know more about, please make a comment below.

As for my background, I am an instrument designer, an entrepreneur and a teacher.  I have my share of experience with open source and also proprietary products.  I’ve built microscope systems on LabVIEW and National Instruments hardware, automated vacuum systems on Microchip hardware, distributed data acquisition systems on Java and I teach an autonomous robotics class using Arduino each year at the University of California.  My company has recently ported an Arduino-based data acquisition system over for free use by the public and I am a huge fan of what open source tools have done for the community.

Some topics for the blog will include open-source programming languages, Integrated Development Environments and hardware platforms.  If you have any favorites or if you’d like to hear about a particular open-source technology, please comment below.
