Sensors expo & conference 2012 June 5

- June 5, 2012

Day one of Sensors Expo & conference in Chicago featured a pre-conference symposia with some industry experts in MEMS and sensor technology.

Breakout sessions were:

Symposium 1: MEMS in the mainstream: Commercialization and product realization--leveraging the MEMS infrastructure
Symposium 2: Energy Harvesting for powering sensors--tutorials
Symposium 3: Smart sensors systems design

Later, in Session 1, there was a panel of experts to discuss "Product realization and the MEMS supply chain." Shown below from left to right is Karen Lightman, moderator--Managing director of MIG; Peter Himes, VP marketing and strategic alliance for Silex microsystems; Jeanette Wilson, PLM, consumer and industrial sensors, Freescale; Jim Clardy, Principal engineer, emerging technologies and strategies for end-user computing for Dell and Steve Whalley, Director of sensors, Intel architecture group.

There was a lively discussion regarding challenges from a foundry perspective for MEMS suppliers followed by an active audience feedback session.

Finally, we see below, three other experts in the industry---from left to right: Rob O'Reilly, Analog Devices---presented "The ADI MEMS story: A passion for high performance"; Professor Dr. Thomas Gessner, Fraunhofer ENAS who presented "Generations of smart integrated systems--overview and novel examples"; and Dr. Jay Asfandyari, ST microelectronics who presented "Commercialization and product realization---the ST Microelectronics story."

These gentlemen and ladies provided a discussion to help attending companies find solutions to their sensing challenges and helped prepare attendees for the future of MEMS and sensors. Attendees learned about cutting-edge approaches to measurement and detection. New ideas to automate and improve processes were imparted as well.

Sam Nork, Director of Linear Technology Boston design center, presented Energy harvesting solutions regarding obtaining useable electricity from ambient sources.

These are just a few of the many conferences presented in the three breakout sessions of day one.

Tomorrow, June 6th, sixty regular conference sessions begin and extend to June 7th as well as the Expo floor being open with almost 200 exhibitors
