Open-source hardware: Are you on board?

-April 19, 2013

Welcome to our 5 Engineers section, part of this blog and our Fun Friday newsletter, where we toss out a question and invite our audience to respond with their wittiest answers.

This week, on the cusp of DESIGN West and its many open-source hardware and software (OSHS) sessions, we’re thinking specifically about open-source hardware (OSH).

OSH is a growing trend, particularly among younger engineers. It seems that you’re either fully on-board with OSH, proudly cheering on positives like efficiency in prototyping and feedback from a strong design community (as SparkFun’s Chris Taylor discusses here), or rail against it, stating negatives like licensing issues and sometimes less than professional craftsmanship in design.

So this week, we’re asking: Are you on board with OSH? Why or why not?

Post your short answers below and be sure to stay tuned to this blog for more 5 Engineers questions in the weeks to come!
