Finalist: RE4-GP hard-disk drive, Western Digital
Reducing power consumption by up to 50% compared with traditional hard drives, Western Digital's RE4-GP "green" enterprise-class HDD was developed to enable enterprise customers to build servers and storage subsystems with high capacities, consistent performance, and assured reliability, all while promoting energy conservation. A 1-TB hard drive has a typical power-consumption rating greater than 13.5W. The RE4-GP provides an average power savings of 5W over standard drives, equating to reducing CO2 emissions by up to 60 kilograms per drive, per year—the equivalent of taking a car off the road for 14 days each year. The reduced power consumption can save large data-intensive systems up to $10 per drive, per year in electricity costs. With 64 MBytes of onboard cache, the Western Digital RE4-GP provides fast random and sequential access, offers ultra cool and quiet operation, and delivers 1.2 million hours MTBF.
