Electronic Business' Top 100 Chinese electronics companies

The EB300
To see how the top Chinese companies stack up against the worldwide leaders in electronics, check out the 2006 Electronic Business 300.

Top 100 Chinese Electronic CompaniesThey are no Intel or Texas Instruments—at least not yet. Nevertheless, Chinese companies are starting to gain enough critical mass to gain notice in the global electronics industry, as an Electronic Business analysis of the "Top 100 Chinese Companies" shows.

Legend Holdings, which owns the Lenovo brand that bought IBM's PC division, topped this year's list with $17.8 billion in annual revenue, followed by Haier Group with $13.9 billion. Huawei, one of Cisco's top rivals on the international market, posted revenues of $8.4 billion.

Interestingly, of the top 15 revenue generators on the list, nine posted a loss last year. While this may be the result of aggressive growth strategies in highly competitive global markets, it bears watching year to year. Companies are in the business of making money, and even the largest and most deep-pocketed cannot go very long before they either have to change their business strategy—something often forced by investors and boards of directors—or before they get sold off, either whole or in pieces.

Even for those companies in the plus column, only three had net income that was greater than 10 percent of revenue. About a third of the 100 companies on the list posted losses for the year.

China and India hold the greatest potential as new markets for internal consumption. China has 1.3 billion people, and India has 1 billion. Together, they comprise more than a third of the world's total population. But how indigenous companies in each of these markets fare on the world stage, or even their local markets, competing against multinational companies with seasoned management teams, remains a big question mark.
