3G cellular router for M2M apps gets Wi-Fi access point

-April 10, 2013

B&B Electronics is making good use of its acquisitions—it’s just announced that its rugged SPECTRE 3G cellular router now features 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi connectivity. The SPECTRE3G-W wireless cellular router leverages Wi-Fi from Quatech, purchased in 2011 and cellular networking router capabilities from Conel, acquired in 2012.

The single-box solution provides local M2M network connectivity through its built-in Wi-Fi Hotspot, Ethernet 10/100 and I/0 ports, and connects to the Internet via CDMA and HSPA+ cellular telephone networks. It can serve as a Wi-Fi Access Point or Hotspot and scan for and tie into existing short-distance wireless networks.

The router is managed through a Web interface or a powerful scripting engine. Firmware-Over-The-Air (FOTA) technology allows the router to be set to automatically update its configuration and firmware from the operator’s central server, achieving simultaneous mass reconfiguration of every router on the network.  The rugged metal casing has a wide operating range of -30 to 60 degrees C and DIN-Rail mounts support M2M connectivity in harsh and remote environments.

Enterprise and industrial M2M communications systems are targeted, including:

  • Enterprise networking
  • Transportation providers (railway, bus)
  • Intelligent transportation systems/ITS (traffic, toll, parking, digital signage)
  • Security/camera monitoring
  • Transaction management (ATMS, point-of-sale, kiosks, lottery)
  • Remote monitoring
  • Industrial automation
  • Energy management
  • Geological, environmental, weather monitoring

Two SPECTRE3G-W models are available. The RT3G-300-W includes one 10/100 Ethernet port, a USB host port, binary I/O port, Wi-Fi and dual SIM card holders. The RT3G-310-W includes an additional Ethernet port.

SPECTRE3G-W supports 802.11b/g/n standards, 64/128 WEP, TKIP, and AES authentication, WPA-PSK, WPA2-PSK and shared security. VPN tunneling provides secure communications across the cellular network.

An R-SeeNet remote management platform allows users to configure and manage multiple routers. The router supports VPN protocols including IPSec, OpenVPN and GRE Tunneling. It also supports DHCP, NAT, NAT-T, SMTP, DynDNS, NTP, VRRP, HTTPS, SSH, OSPF, RIP, and BGP control by SMS. Contact company for pricing and availability.
