Adhesive vents increase airflow in outdoor electronic enclosures

Aimed at enhancing the reliability of outdoor electronic enclosures used in the solar, telecommunications, exterior lighting, and smart-meter industries, adhesive vents in the VE9 series from W.L. Gore employ an ePTFE (expanded polytetrafluoroethylene) membrane that offers a typical airflow of 1150 ml/min/cm2. According to the manufacturer, this allows for rapid equalization of pressure caused by sudden temperature changes and reduces stress on enclosure seals.

In addition to extending the life of outdoor electronic enclosures, the VE9 series enables enclosures to be designed with standard seals and gaskets, eliminating the need to upgrade to more costly ruggedized seals and gaskets. The robust vents withstand water, dust, dirt, rain, and other harmful liquids.

VE9 series vents come in various sizes, ranging from 3.3×7.6 mm to 20×29 mm, with a typical thickness of 0.32 mm. Vents can be mounted on either the interior or exterior of the housing, depending on the protection rating required. The silicone adhesive used in the VE9 series has a service temperature range of –40°C to +125C.
