RS-485 transceiver boasts high isolation

Intersil’s ISL32741E RS-485 differential bus transceiver offers a working voltage of 1000 V RMS and reinforced isolation of 6 kV—two times higher than competitive parts, according to the manufacturer. The transceiver also furnishes 12.8 kV of surge immunity. A second device, the ISL32740E has a working voltage of 600 V RMS and isolation of 2.5 kV.

Both transceivers operate with 3 V to 5 V power supplies and provide 40 Mbps bidirectional data communication for use in industrial IoT networks. Their compact 16-lead SOIC-W package with true 8-mm creepage distance enables high channel density for programmable logic controllers in factory automation applications. The ISL32740E is also available in a 16-lead QSOP.

The transceivers are compliant with EN 50081 and EN 50082-2 EMC standards, as well as the umbrella line-voltage standard for information technology equipment EN 61000. Other features include 15 kV ESD bus-pin protection, thermal shutdown protection, and PROFIBUS compliance.

Prices for the ISL32740E and ISL32741E RS-485 transceivers range from $3.79 to $4.79, depending on package type and temperature range. Evaluation boards are available for $99.
