Intel's FinFETs are less fin and more triangle

Article Source: EDN | Date: 2012-05-17T18:00:22Z
...LONDON -- Reverse engineering and analysis consultancy Chipworks Inc  has posted microscope cross-sections of parts of the 22-nm Ivy Bridge processor from Intel that has revealed that the FinFETs, which Intel calls tri-gate transistors, are in fact trapezoidal, almost triangular, in cross-section. The ICs were 64-bit, four-core Xeon E3-1230 CPUs intended for the server market, which Chipworks (Ottawa, Ontario) said it obtained in Hong Kong, China. The triangular section is markedly different to the idealized rectangular section that Intel had shown previously in 2011. However, it is not clear...

Article Source: EDN | Date: 2012-05-15T18:22:54Z
...SAN JOSE -- Advanced Micro Devices officially launched its 32-nm Trinity processors, going head-to-head in notebooks and desktops with Intel's 22-nm Ivy Bridge CPUs. The AMD parts sport upgraded x86 and graphics cores that keep it competitive in performance with some parts consuming as little as 17W, geared for ultrathin notebooks. AMD claims it has already shipped more than a million Trinity chips to PC...

Four reasons why MIPS new cores may make it relevant again

Article Source: EDN | Date: 2012-05-14T17:54:09Z
...NEW YORK -- MIPS Technologies last week rolled out a new generation of microprocessor cores called Aptiv. With the new cores' smaller die size and reduced energy consumption compared to ARM's midrange core like A15, MIPS is hoping that the new  family of cores can put the company back on track.  "We will gain leadership again" on the competitive microprocessor IP market, according...

Adlink expands PXI/PXIe-instrument family

Article Source: EDN | Date: 2012-04-05T19:01:00Z
... PXI and PXI Express continue to grow as platforms for automated test. Targeting that market, Adlink has added a chassis, a controller, and two I/O modules to its PXI product line. The $3600 PXES-2590 chassis provides nine hybrid PXI/PXIe slots—an industry first, according to the vendor. The chassis provides as much as 8-Gbyte/sec data throughput, with 1 Gbyte/sec dedicated to each I/O slot. The chassis uses four-lane PXIe, in which each lane handles data transfers for two I/O slots. Adlink has also released the PXIe-3975 system-controller module, which uses a 2.4-GHz quad-core processor. The $3600...
