29th annual microprocessor directory

By Robert Cravotta, Technical Editor -- 10/3/2002

Editor's note: The most recent edition of the Microprocessor Directory is always available at www.edn.com/microdirectory.

Welcome to the 29th consecutive year of the EDN Microprocessor/Microcontroller Directory. Although the last year has seen a number of new architectures, processor vendors have generally focused on expanding their existing architectures. As a result, some devices, at the discretion of the processor vendors, have left the list, and others have replaced them. Likewise, the directory has experienced similar additions and deletions in the list of processor vendors. Some of the changes are the result of companies combining and the device families moving under a new company name. Some vendors have changed their short-term focus and withdrawn their processors from the market; others have concluded legal proceedings that resulted in the refocusing of competing processor vendors and the removal of their device families from the market. In short, the processor market is continuing along with business as usual.

In an attempt to maintain a clear distinction among devices, this directory includes only microprocessors and microcontrollers. It omits network processors, DSPs, and other logic devices that do not support software programming because EDN publishes other directories that cover those types of devices. However, the directory includes processor cores and programmable-logic devices with embedded-processor cores.

The tables in the following PDF files provide a consolidated view of many vendor-device families and identify an assortment of architectural and device features that will help you quickly compare processors.

Further, the following PDF contains comprehensive information and write-ups about all processor vendors and device families:
