Dubai Silicon Oasis (DSO), the Dubai government’s initiative to build an integrated technology park for micro- and opto-electronics reported today that it has appointed Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) president George M. Scalise to head its Advisory Board.

DSO is a microelectronics technology park covering more than 7 million square meters with end-to-end, turnkey facilities for the design and development of ICs and the fabrication, manufacturing and assembly of electronic systems.

At the SIA, Scalise directs a staff focused on international trade and government affairs, workforce, technology, environmental-safety and health and communications.

Additionally Scalise currently serves on President George W. “George has one of the world’s best reputations in the semiconductor industry. He is a highly respected technology industry spokesperson and carries a special interest and expertise in technology, international trade and competition issues,” said Dr. Jurgen Knorr, CEO of DSO, in a statement.

“He will be an invaluable asset to us as we continue grow the number of technology-based companies that have opened operations within DSO and contribute to the overall economic development in Dubai,” he added.

Launched in January 2004, DSO aims to offer an alternative to high cost semiconductor development through its business ready infrastructure that utilizes regional talent, financial incentives and subsidies on EDA tools and technology, so that companies can quickly set up shop for accelerated time to market of their electronic products.

“Dubai is the commercial center of the United Arab Emirates and is emerging economically and technologically faster than anyplace in the world. The government has designed and is implementing DSO as a specific technology park committed to semiconductor design, development and manufacturing. I am delighted to be part of their efforts,” Scalise noted.

Also, as a founding member of the Semiconductor Research Corp., an industry-funded organization that provides resources for pre-competitive semiconductor research at American universities, DSO said Scalise will play a role in continued development of DSO's university technology programs.
