HD DVD Encryption Cracked?
Folks, I don't vouch for the validity of this Digg post, but I wanted to get it in front of your eyeballs as soon as possible just in case. Read through the currently-overwhelmed-Doom9-server comments (mirror here) and let me know what you think. My favourite Digg comment so far: "And it's official. HD DVD has just won the High Def format war."
Followup: More from Engadget and Slashdot. Oh dear. And right before CES. This is bad news if it's true, and not easily plugged. Seriously. As I recently said in more depth, reasonable DRM is a prerequisite to rich content availability and adequate artist compensation. I'm not (yet, stay tuned) sure to what degree this potential breach also affects Blu-ray, which includes additional DRM in the form of BD+.
Followup II: Ars Technica's thoughts.
