Paul Rako is EDN’s analog guy. After attending GMI (now Kettering University) and the University of Michigan, he worked as a design engineer for five years in the auto business, both for GM in the heavy-truck division and for Ford in the light-truck division. Paul became somewhat disenchanted with the auto business and moved to California’s Silicon Valley, where he resides to this very day.

A brief stint at a military contractor gave Paul an appreciation for high-reliability design and mil-spec documentation. He then started his own business and consulted for 20 years. Tinkering with guitar amplifiers and reverb effects sparked his initial interest in analog. By reading EDN and other trade papers, he sharpened his analog skills to the point where he could consult to Hewlett-Packard, Teledyne, and Schlumberger, along with many smaller companies. In the late 1990s he worked in two startups, mercanti systems and OQO. Paul grew weary of the startup culture (as well as the 40-mile commute) and joined National Semiconductor in 2001. He served as an application engineer for the both the Amplifier and Web groups. After five years with National, he joined EDN in 2006.

Paul's interests include politics, philosophy, motorcycles, and making music and videos. He has five Harley Sportsters, a studio full of musical instruments, a complete laboratory, and a 10,000 pound milling machine at his home/office/loft/shop/studio/consulting-place megaplex in Sunnyvale, CA.
