Methodology
  • An email survey was sent to EDN magazine subscribers. The study was fielded during the month of May 2007. Results of the survey were tabulated by Research Results, an independent research firm.
  • Results are based on 1,201 usable replies. At a 95% confidence level, results are accurate with a margin of ±2.8%.

Demographics

  • Average age is 47
  • Average number of years as an engineer: 19.5.
  • Average number of years in current job: 5.5; number of years with current employer: 7.
  • 95% have college degrees, with 55% having a Bachelor's, 26% having a Master's, and 4% having a Ph.D.
  • 12% refer to test engineering as their primary discipline, while 11% are involved in board-based design. 10% perform processor-based design; equal numbers perform analog and communications systems design.

Compensation

  • Average annual salary is $90,000.
  • 38% of salaries this year are over $100,000.
  • Most salary increases were between 2% and 4%, with an average of 3.5%.
