Category: Analog ICs
Finalist: CS556X/7X/8X industrial A/D converter (Cirrus Logic)

Experienced systems designers have come to know the inherent disadvantages associated with the various ADC architectures: the high supply current and power consumption of flash converters, the phase-noise sensitivities of delta-sigma converters, the valid output latency of pipeline converters, and the noise sensitivity of SAR (successive-approximation-register) converters. Cirrus Logic has developed a series of converters that offer the noise immunity and bit count of delta-sigma converters with the speed and low distortion of SAR converters. The $8.95 (1000) CS5560 offers 24-bit resolution and a 50k-sample/sec conversion rate. The $8.45 (1000) CS5581 offers 16-bit resolution and a 200k-sample/sec conversion rate. In addition the parts have typical DNL (differential-nonlinearity) error as low as ±0.04 LSB. This combination of specifications and affordable prices makes this family of parts an innovation for 2007.
