Category: Mixed-Signal ASSPs
Finalist: AMRT-1410/AMRI-2000 input-device IC (Avago Technologies)

Avago Technologies’ AMRT-1410 and AMRI-2000 input-device ICs combine electronic and mechanical design to provide an innovative control surface that exceeds the capabilities of conventional capacitive-sensor chips. The modules combine a mobile navigation-pad module with a navigation sensor and interface. They incorporate a five-way-rocker switch with scroll-wheel emulation, a mouse, and a joystick. The parts sense the X-, Y-, and Z-axis movement of a metal disk over multiple sense electrodes. The embedded capacitive sensing offers high precision and makes the devices independent of the capacitance that the user’s finger provides. This feature allows users to operate the input device with any skin condition and while wearing gloves.

The AMRT-1410 navigation-pad module incorporates a self-centering button with an integrated click function in a compact 14-mm-diameter, 1.7-mm-tall package. The ARMI-2000 navigation-sensor and interface IC enables the input to operate as a digital four- or eight-way switch with a scroll-wheel function and as an analog mouse and joystick.
