Category: Innovator of the Year
Finalist: Glenn Woppman, president and CEO (Asset InterTech)

During 2008, Glenn Woppman’s innovative technical leadership made the concept of open tools for EI (embedded instrumentation) a reality. EI is IP (intellectual property) inserted into silicon to more effectively perform tasks such as design validation, test, and debug.

Beginning when Asset was still part of TI, Woppman led his team as it contributed significantly to the development of the IEEE 1149.1 boundary scan/JTAG standard. After Asset became an independent company, Woppman and his team achieved several breakthroughs, including the first and only third-party tools platform for Intel’s IBIST (Interconnect Built In Self Test), an early instance of proprietary EI IP. The spark of Woppman’s innovation was the realization (and the subsequent execution on this vision) that open EI tools would significantly enhance the value of proprietary EI IP, optimize the effectiveness of EI IP for engineers, and promulgate EI technology.

As Asset developed the first open tools platform for EI – ScanWorks for Embedded Instrumentation – Woppman knew that open, industry-accepted standards were also needed. Consequently, he deployed considerable resources to the development of open EI standards, including the co-chairmanship by Asset’s chief technology officer of the IEEE P1687 IJTAG (Internal JTAG) standard. The goals for the IJTAG initiative are to provide a nonproprietary standard for access and control of EI regardless of the source of the IP. Moreover, Woppman realized that building an ecosystem among technology providers would be imperative if the promise of EI were to be achieved. Through his leadership, an ecosystem is now evolving. Woppman’s vision, actions, and commitment to a creative technical solution will benefit the entire industry.
