Finalist: Opus architecture design team (Octasic)
The Opus engineering team designed Octasic’s Opus architecture, which solves the most pressing issue of the DSP industry: power consumption. Building a network that can deliver on the full promise of broadband communication will require more processing capacity in every piece of equipment. DSP manufacturers increasingly pack processing capacity into DSPs to meet this challenge, but the power consumed by traditional designs is rising faster than the gains in capacity. With Opus, Octasic breaks this barrier by delivering unprecedented power-to-performance ratios.
Octasic’s Vocallo multicore media gateway DSP is the first product based on the Opus core. Vocallo is the first DSP platform of its kind to enable a new flexible business model for OEMs designing media gateways. This business model enables an OEM to design a cost-reduced gateway to handle today’s VOIP (voice-over-IP) needs with licensable performance to accommodate future applications. This capability allows OEMs to defer the costs of additional performance capacity until they deliver and charge for an application that requires it. Given the central role DSPs play in media gateway design, there is no better way for an OEM to chart its own course, especially now, as the VOIP market is about to hit its stride. Vocallo also supports emerging network architectures and applications, such as IMS and fixed mobile convergence. In addition, it provides support for robust real-time video transcoding, transrating, and conferencing.
One of the strengths of the Opus architecture is that, unlike many competing products, it maintains a traditional programming model preserving customers’ investment in applications and skill set. The ability to achieve such low power enables developers to leverage a multicore DSP architecture without rewriting code. The Opus kernel and IDE (Integrated Development Environment) provide the tools necessary to quickly develop, test, and debug software for this high-performance DSP platform in a predictable fashion.
