Category: Power ICs: General Converters
Finalist: FAN5355 800-/1000-mA, 3-MHz buck converter (Fairchild Semiconductor)

Fairchild’s FAN5355 allows the system chip to adjust the output voltage dynamically lending itself to be used in systems architected for dynamic voltage scaling (DVS). It provides the high efficiency for DVS applications and extends battery life. This buck regulator is equipped with an I2C interface allowing the system to dynamically adjust the digital core power supply voltage based on the processor workload. By tailoring the power supply voltage level to the processing state of the core, energy consumption is reduced. The FAN5355 offers the industry’s highest efficiency 3MHz solution for DVS applications. It also offers the industry’s best-in-class transient response. This is especially impressive given this product’s low quiescent current. These innovations lead to reduced energy consumption and extend battery life.

Portable applications have more and more processors. In a cell phone, there can be as many as ten processors to execute tasks to support features such as higher resolution graphics, USB 2.0 interface, MP3/video storage and playback and wireless interfaces. The challenge is how to manage the power of all of these power-hungry processors in these applications. One way to solve this power issue is through dynamic voltage scaling, which involves modulating the voltage supply of each processor. The FAN5355 is an innovative solution to a difficult system level problem.
