  • Mothers of innovation: 12 women engineers and scientists to know
  • Some may argue that the title is sexist :) Hey, you don't have an article on space dads. I just watched a PBS program about the women of the space program and one of their pet peeves was that whenever they got on TV or got interviewed by the press, the center of the conversation was not their accomplishments as much as how they balanced home life, kids, husbands, etc. That was in the 60s and 70s so it is not part of the liberal feminist politically correct agenda :)

  • Sony pride turns to disillusionment
  • I too agree that brand loyalty is probably going less and less. With online reviews at Amazon and instant price/feature comparison, users now have more tools at their hands to compare brands and choose carefully. No loyalty or word of mouth from trusted friends is needed. It's not like engineering where the learning curve or time to market can hinder you from venturing into new technologies. Its by definition a consumer market. You buy it to use it.

  • Opinion: Kindle ramp surprises amateur pundit
  • You know what's good about a book? You can store it anywhere, you can throw it around, you can fall asleep on it without fear of crushing it, you can mark it with whatever pencil or marker lying next to, you don't fear of it getting scratched or running out of batteries, and finally you can share it and pass it around. Until Kindle can do all that, I'm not paying the hefty price for it.

  • Virtual music reproduction scheme achieves file size 1,000 times smaller than MP3
  • I don't see how practical that will be. I expect the models to be very complicated and to record an actual song a huge numbers of those modeled are needed given all the varieties of instruments that musicians use nowadays. The players are another story. I would be more interested in seeing better compression schemes and larger storage capabilities plus more reliance on wireless technology. The technique may be very useful in other areas other than music.

  • Brain boggler #3 - the conundrum of conundrums!
  • Wouldn't centrifugal force act on the ball perpendicular to the direction of movement? I don't recall how to predict the path in that case (was it but certainly the path will be more complicated than previously described.
