- Far too expensive in component-, installation- and maintenance costs. Consider designing a multipoint network, similar to the one in Fig. 6, with some 40 to 60 nodes (typical number of nodes in an e-meter network), using optical taps. You'll quickly be changing to RS-485 or CAN.

- Interface chips: Between logic and a hard place
Declaring RS485 as an old interface standard in the same sentence with RS232, while stating that USB and FireWire are modern standards, leaves the impression that RS-standards are going soon to be obsolete. The RS485 in particular is the workhorse interface of the industry with its 32 unit loads and 1200 ft maximum length. Only recently Texas Instruments and Maxim have introduced new RS485 transceivers that easily double cable length throug integrated frequency response compensation. Also the world's most widely used fieldbus technology PROFIBUS uses improved RS485 transceivers with drastically reduced output capaitance and improved differential output voltage. Therefore the RS485 standard with its continuously improving transceiver circuits is and will be, with regards to industrial applications, the physical layer standard for decades to come.
