  • Data-rich 3.5mm jack vies with USB-C for headsets
  • "Originally invented in the 19th century". I am pretty sure the 3.5mm was not invented back when dirt was still rock. I believe that one was the 1/4" (6.35mm). Tip, ring, sleeve. Ah, the good old days! I believe the 3.5 came into being in the 50's. I seem to remember it on my crystal radio. Have a nice day. TTFN

  • Altium CircuitStudio review: The glory
  • I have been in this industry for 45 years now. It was much easier when we jotted a design on the butcher paper tablecloth at the pizza parlor and then gave it to drafting to put it on velum and make it pretty. And of course, having them tape the board out was interesting to watch. Then after 20 or so years came CAD. Schema, Orcad, Pads, Mentor Graphics, Altium, Protel, to name a few. All different. All a PITA sometimes. I am getting close to retirement now. So I went looking for an inexpensive solution that I can use to keep myself happy.(I intend to design myself some QRP rigs.) Kicad was my choice. I have not seen an issue with the schematic capture as of yet. I suppose I will. I have laid out two boards with it and find it much easier than I expected. So free can be good. I like the forum and the help that is available there. Altium is an exceptional product, but it has too many buttons and tabs and features. It can be somewhat daunting, IMO. Also the lack of documentation is a hindrance. Kicad is a bit more basic but does all I need. And the price is difficult to beat. I will follow your journey through this in case I change my mind and also find money.

  • 6 major electronics technology designs from 1956
  • Steve, I know what you were trying to say to us but our copy of the article shows just µF not µµF. Thus the confusion. (Used to see mmf also.) So the original schematic or written description for sure showed µµF or mmf but your copy does not show that. Just µF, hence his comment.

  • 6 major electronics technology designs from 1956
  • I am from that era. I built my own crystal radio using a rusty razor blade as the detector. Coil wound on oatmeal container. So there. :) Old ham I helped in 1975 was Lee De Forests engineering tech. Many good stories were told to me about this man. Shenoya, I bet the text said µµF, which is the 'old' way of saying pF. (Only way I knew for a long time.) Probably cleaned up in the text by someone who proof read it. (Though so few proof read anymore, I wonder.) It was fun to read this! Brought back some fond memories to this old guy.
