Vote for the Engineer of the Year!

-November 20, 2015

It’s that time of year again: time for you to cast your vote for the DesignCon Engineer of the Year. The editors of EDN and EETimes as well as the staff of DesignCon would like to offer a hearty congratulations to the nominees. For this year’s award, the winner (or his/her representative) will be able to direct a $10,000 donation to any secondary institution in the US, courtesy of National Instruments. The details on each nominee are below as provided by the person who made the nomination. Please cast your vote using the embedded survey below or follow this link. The survey closes December 20th at 11:45 PM Eastern Time. The winner will be announced at DesignCon 2016.

Meng He
Executive Business Manager, Maxim Integrated
Meng He, Executive Business Manager at Maxim Integrated, focuses on power management and interface solutions. She is not only an engineer focused on power products, but also a passionate leader full of creative ideas filled with ways to unlock the hidden market potential for innovative products. In the past year, she has led efforts across system engineering, product management, business development, and marketing to define strategies to launch Maxim’s latest synchronous power products. She has been focused on peeling back technical barriers of power product features and delivering powerful customer benefits.  “Challenging the impossible to change the world” is her motto.

Meng treats solutions and products with the spirit of an entrepreneur and leads teams with passion, ambition and positivity. Her work has been published in over 10 publications covering power system optimization, mixed signal system designs, capacitive touch sensing and analog basics. One of her articles, titled Boost System Performance with the right DC/DC converter, explores the synchronous and nonsynchronous topology of buck converters. It has been translated into various languages including German, English, and Italian, and has been published in four separate publications. Meng took on the challenge to explore the next innovation in the Internet of Things, which she believes to be effortless wireless charging. At DesignCon 2016, she will be sharing her thoughts on this subject in her presentation, titled Wireless Charging: Past, Present and Future.

Eric Bogatin
Dean, Signal Integrity Academy, Teledyne LeCroy
Eric has established himself as an industry-wide resource for all things SI and PI.  His books, public classes, and on-line resources - combined with decades of practical experience - are leveraged by novice and experienced engineers alike.  Eric has forged a unique style of making complex things simple, with both essential rules-of-thumb and simplified equations that can be easily accessed and applied.  As an industry leader he consistently chooses to partner rather than compete, and can often be found going out of his way to help other engineers succeed.  Indeed, there is no one working in SI and/or PI today who has not been influenced by Eric in some way. This year, Eric will be leading an all day Signal Integrity Bootcamp at DesignCon, participating in a speed-training in the Chiphead Theater, as well as contributing to panels.

Bob Schaefer
Master Signal Integrity Engineer, Keysight Technologies
Bob's contribution to the signal integrity industry has been legendary over the past 40 years, covering everything from TDR calibration software to one-port automatic fixture removal. Known for his intelligence, Bob’s many contributions are widely recognized in the industry and include constant enhancements to signal integrity software analysis tools, many based on customer inputs. His expert knowledge in digital, RF, software, and hardware technologies make him tremendously valuable.

A long-time contributor to DesignCon, Bob has made tremendous contributions to the signal integrity world this year including:
  • Architect of the Automatic Fixture Removal application
  • Architect of the Physical Layer Test Software 2015 Release
  • Innovative calibration algorithms
  • Developing multiple customer solutions for high frequency, multi port applications at Intel, Amphenol, and Cisco.
  • Leading a team in Beijing to innovate TD and VNA calibration and de-embedding techniques. His leadership makes him one of the top engineers to work with.

Istvan Novak
Senior Principal Engineer, Oracle (Sun Microsystems)
Istvan is a luminary in the field of signal integrity and power integrity and helps anyone who calls him (even outside his company).  He has written two books on power integrity and is the go-to guy for information on these topics.  He teaches courses in his spare time (I'm not sure how he has any). More information about him can be found at  Profiles in Design: Istvan Novak

The first DesignCon Istvan attended was in 1994 in Hungary.  In 1995 in Santa Clara he had a joint paper about VXI clock routing.  Since 1999, he has been participating with papers, tutorials, and panel discussions.

Steve Weir
Owner/President/Engineer, IPBLOX
Steve Weir passed away in August 2015. He was a tremendous thought leader on the subject of power integrity, a brilliant innovator and engineer.  He also had an incredible sense of humor.  I will deeply miss seeing Steve at DesignCon and hearing him tell one of his “war stories“ about a design experience, and I would always come away both laughing and learning.  His contribution to DesignCon and to the global design community needs no explanation or superlatives.  He is one of the founding engineers of DesignCon.
