The electronics industry increasingly depends on automation and robotics technology to increase accuracy and speed and reduce cost. And that market is booming.

According to a BCC Research report, the market for whole robots, robot parts, robot software, and related safety materials is approaching $22 billion. "Research forecasts it will rise at a five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.9% between 2013 and 2018, when it's expected to surpass $29 billion."

In the crowdsourcing community, robotics-based products are catching the attention and support of investors. At Kickstarter, for example, inventors have proposed and received funding for a huge variety of projects. Many are aimed at getting youngsters interested in science, math, engineering, and technology (STEM) subjects. Others serve industrial needs. Inventions come from across the globe, from China and Japan to the US.
