Mixer covers 3 GHz to 20 GHz

A double-balanced mixer, Linear Technology’s LTC5552 offers wideband RF matching from 3 GHz to 20 GHz, matched LO from 1 GHz to 20 GHz, and differential IF from DC to 6 GHz. Used for frequency up-conversion or down-conversion, the mixer comes in a very small 3×2-mm, 12-lead QFN package.

The LTC5552’s DC-capable differential IF port enables the LO to be close in frequency to the RF. Its low LO-to-RF leakage of less than -25 dBm eases the burden on the external filter. In addition, the part achieves linearity of 20.1 dBm IIP3 at 14 GHz and 18.3 dBm at 17 GHz. The mixer’s integrated broadband LO buffer requires 0 dBm drive, eliminating the need for an external high-power LO amplifier circuit.

A wideband balun transformer in the RF port allows single-ended 50 Ω matched operation over the LTC5552’s specified frequency range. The mixer is powered from a single 3.3 V supply and typically consumes 132 mA of supply current. Additionally, the LTC5552 can be shut down via an enable pin. When deactivated, the device draws only 100 µA maximum standby current.

The microwave mixer is rated from -40°C to +105°C case temperature to allow extended operation in high temperatures. Prices for the LTC5552 start at $22 each in lots of 1000 units. Samples and production quantities are available immediately.
