LEDs boost lumen density

-January 15, 2018

Cree’s XLamp XD16 series of LEDs achieves up to 5½ times higher lumen density than its previous-generation of high-power LEDs. These ceramic-based LEDs produce more than 284 lumens per square millimeter from a package size of just 1.6×1.6 mm.

Along with increased lumen density, the XD16 LEDs offer low optical crosstalk—reducing system-level optical loss by up to three times compared to other technologies when LEDs are placed close together on a board. The LEDs can be used in a broad spectrum of lighting applications, including headlights where better beam control and decreased size and weight are beneficial.

The Xlamp XD16 LEDs are characterized and binned at 85°C and are available in ANSI white, as well as EasyWhite 3-step and 5-step color temperatures (2700K to 6500K) with CRI (color rendering indexing) options of 70, 80, and 90.

Product samples are available now and production quantities are offered with standard lead times. Sold through Cree’s distributor network, including Arrow Electronics, prices range from approximately $0.94 to $1.36 in single unit quantities.
