Whether your company has automated PCB fabrication or assembly facilities or you use a third party, inspection is essential to product quality. While you can get some rather expensive visual inspection equipment, sometimes all you need is a basic digital microscope. Saelig’s SAE106S gives you a view between the IC pins where you can look for soldering defects such as insufficient solder paste. You can also use the microscope to inspect mechanical devices, molds, or 3D-printed parts.

The SAE106S is a complete system that includes optics (10X to 220X zoom), lighting, and a 4.3-in LCD display. Two arm-mounted rings of eight LEDs illuminate the target and you can control the intensity and position as needed. Once you capture an image with 1080P resolution on the screen, you can save images or videos to a USB flash drive or microSD card (using an adapter) and transfer them to a computer for analysis or storage. The screen’s USB port also lets you connect it directly to a PC. The SAE106S price is $199.

“Cool, just ordered one! It seems more of my clients are developing very small mobile devices and this should help in troubleshooting EMI issues.”
“I don't do enough PCB work to warrant buying one, but I did recently buy a magnifier headband.”
“It looks like it has a pretty good working distance. I have a few of those USB microscopes that have grown quite common in the last several years. They work great for looking at things, but the working distance is so small that it is pretty difficult to
